How to Choose the Right TV Size (Complete Guide)

Choosing the right TV size is one of the most important decisions when upgrading your home entertainment setup. Too small, and you'll squint from the couch. Too large, and you might experience eye strain or the picture won't look sharp. The key is finding the sweet spot between screen size, viewing distance, and resolution.

The Viewing Distance Rule

For 4K TVs (which is now the standard), the general rule is: your viewing distance in feet should be approximately equal to the TV size in inches divided by 12. For example, a 65-inch 4K TV is ideal at about 5.4 feet away. This ensures you can appreciate the full resolution without seeing individual pixels.

Screen Size vs. Screen Area

TV sizes are measured diagonally, which can be misleading. A 65-inch TV doesn't have 18% more screen than a 55-inch — it actually has about 40% more viewing area. This is because area scales with the square of the diagonal. Our comparator tool shows you this difference visually so there are no surprises.

Room Size Guidelines

  • Small rooms (under 8 ft viewing): 43–50 inches
  • Medium rooms (8–10 ft viewing): 55–65 inches
  • Large rooms (10–12 ft viewing): 65–75 inches
  • Home theaters (12+ ft viewing): 75–85+ inches

Will It Fit on My Wall?

Before buying, measure your wall or entertainment center. A 65-inch TV is actually about 57 inches wide and 32 inches tall. Our size guide gives you the exact width and height for every common TV size so you can verify the fit before purchasing.

Resolution Matters

With 4K resolution (3840×2160 pixels), you can sit much closer to a larger screen without noticing pixels. This means you can go bigger than you might think. If you're still using a 1080p TV, you'll need to sit about 1.5–2× farther away for the same perceived sharpness.
